Experts vaunted new strains of seeds, drone aircraft and other technological breakthroughs as solutions-in-the-making for farmers in Africa, where hunger, drought and food price hikes are continent-wide problems.

At the gathering of nutritionists in the 2019 Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium, held annually in Des Moines, Iowa, in the United States, hopes were pinned on a new generation of so-called ‘agro-entrepreneurs’ in Africa.

At the event, USAID administrator Mark Green announced $70 million of investment into research for new seeds and methods to reduce the impact of droughts and disease on crops across the developing world.

“Humanitarian assistance, including food assistance, is treatment, not cure,” said Green. “We must develop new technologies and partnerships that will not only assist displaced families in crisis settings, but offer them livelihood opportunities wherever they can find them.”

The three-day gathering, which ended on Friday, saw some 1,200 experts, policy chiefs, executives and farmers from more than 65 countries tackle food scarcity and price hikes — blights that disproportionately hurt sub-Saharan Africa.

Jennifer Blanke, vice president for agriculture human and social development at the African Development Bank (AfDB) said Africa “missed out” on the green revolution that bumped up harvests across Asia and Latin America in the 1950s and 1960s.

But with new technologies — from unmanned “drone” aircraft to new strains of more resilient crop seeds — coming online, African farmers and policymakers have an opportunity to get agriculture back on track and boost harvests.

“You can do so many things with technology,” said Blanke.

“With drones, you can survey your fields in a minute, which would have taken hours and hours previously. You can spray pesticides. Satellite technology allows you to see what’s happening to weather systems. Basic mobile technology helps farmers in rural areas know what prices they can get for their food.”

In the coming months, Blanke aims to bring together researchers, policymakers and investors to foster helpful policies and roll out schemes to buy and spread technology as well as training farmers and officials how to use it.

Dozens of young African entrepreneurs traveled to Des Moines to network, woo investors and brainstorm ideas for addressing Africa’s worrying problem of producing enough food for a growing population.

They included Ifeoluwa Olatayo, from Nigeria, who was awarded a fellowship from the World Hunger Fighters Foundation, for building small hydroponic farms on rooftops in Ibadan, in Oyo State, for growing lettuce, cucumbers and other vegetables

“Since we’re planting in close proximity to consumers, we’re able to create fast and easy access to nutritious foods while at the same time lessening the impact of transportation on the whole agricultural value chain,” said Olatayo.

“It’s important that people have access to nutritious foods, as affordable and as fresh as possible.” 

Other agro-entrepreneurs are tackling another problem for African farmers — the fact that, thanks to bad roads, poor transport and other woes, entire harvests rot beside the fields they were grown in and never reach market.

Other start-ups involve distributing new varieties of seeds that are more resilient to insects and disease, yield bigger harvests, provide more nutrients, and in some cases taste better than the crops they are replacing.

Lourena Arone Maxwell, from Mozambique, which has been ravaged by disease and droughts since cyclones Idai and Kenneth killed more than 600 people earlier this year, is focussed on fighting crop diseases.

“Plant diseases can reduce the amount of food that farmers have and the solution is a very affordable and environmentally-friendly method to control them,” Maxwell said on the sidelines of an event to honour the first batch of fellows.

Jelentette ki tegnap Viorica Dăncilă leváltott miniszterelnök. Újságírói kérdésre Dăncilă azt mondta, nem tudja, hogy lesz-e az országnak új kormánya az államfőválasztásokig. Szerinte az ellenzéknek nincs kormányprogramja, és senki nem tudja megmondani, mi fog történni az új kormány megalakulásának másnapján. A Szociáldemokrata Párt elnöke megerősítette, hogy az általa vezetett formáció törvényhozói nem fognak részt venni az új kormány megalakulásáról döntő parlamenti szavazáson.

 Egy 65 éves férfit, egy négyéves kislányt és egy hároméves kisfiút sebesített meg egy medve tegnap a Brassó megyei Viktóriavárosban. A gyerekeket kórházba szállították, a férfi megtagadta a beutalást.  Az incidens a város egyik utcáján történt, közel az erdőhöz.  Boris Johnson szombaton akarta szavazásra bocsátani a brit alsóházban az EU-val kötött brexitmegállapodását. Ugyanis bármilyen megállapodást a brit parlamentnek is jóvá kell hagynia. Végül azonban egy olyan pártokon átívelő indítványt szavaztak meg a képviselők, amit Johnson el akart kerülni. Ez biztosítaná, hogy a kilépési megállapodás gyakorlati megvalósításához szükséges törvények is átmenjenek a parlamenten, és ne lehessen ezek akadályozásával rendezetlen brexit. Viszont az indítvány elfogadása lényegében kötelezte Johnsont, hogy a törvénynek megfelelően kérje az október 31-i határidő halasztását 2020. január 31-ig az EU-tól.  Johnson végül elküldte a halasztási kérelmet, de nem írta alá, egy második levélben pedig a hosszabbítás ellen érvelt. Donald Tusk, az Európai Tanács elnöke konzultálni fog a tagországok vezetőivel a további lépésekről, egy halasztást ugyanis egyhangú döntéssel kell jóváhagyniuk. A brexitvita napján, szombaton, tízezrek vonultak utcára Londonban, újabb népszavazást követelve.

Raytheon won a $17.9 million order that procures Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared special test equipment updates to the Windows 10 operating system in support of the F/A-18E/F Super Horner aircraft. The Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared is a multi-sensor, electro-optical targeting pod incorporating thermographic camera, low-light television camera, target laser rangefinder/laser designator, and laser sport tracker developed and manufactured by Raytheon. It is now in full-rate production, fully integrated and flight tested on all F/A-18 models. Word under the new deal will take place in McKinney, Texas and estimated completion will be in February 2022.

Collins Aerospace won a $21.3 million contract modification that exercises an option to provide non-recurring engineering support to modernize the High Power Transmit System installed on the E-6B aircraft. This effort modernizes weapons replaceable assemblies and subsystems of the HPTS to avoid obsolescence. The Boeing E-6 Mercury is a command post and communications relay aircraft manufactured by Boeing for the US Navy. The aircraft relays communications for ballistic missile submarine forces and provides airborne command and control for strategic forces. The Navy introduced the E-6 to replace its EC-130Q aircraft. The E-6B features battle staff positions and an airborne launch control system equipped with land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles. Work under the contract modification will take place in Texas and Iowa and estimated completion will be in May 2022.

Middle East & Africa

Oshkosh Defense won a $159.2 million Foreign Military Sales to Israel for production of Israel modified variant of family of medium tactical vehicles, including initial parts provisioning and training support. In 2017, Israel’s Ministry of Defense purchased the first six trucks to ensure the firm’s Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) meets Israeli requirements. The Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles stands alone as the get-things-done resource for military operations, according to Oshkosh. Crew-protecting armor and advanced technologies work in concert to provide the capability, versatility, mobility and protection to move troops and supplies, recover vehicles and weapon systems or haul equipment wherever the mission requires. Oshkosh Defense will perform work until October 17, 2024.

Europe

During exercise Nickel Strike last month, USAF F-16s from the 555th Fighter Squadron practiced flying mixed formation defensive combat air patrols with Polish F-16s. According to Commander of the 555th Fighter Squadron, Lt. Col. Beau E. Diers, his fighters came under command and control of the Polish AOC while connected to a common datalink network. Demonstrations of combat ability, readiness, and interoperability between American and Polish forces, such as the ones during Nickel Strike, allow for thorough tactical training and strengthening of regional partnerships.

Asia-Pacific

The US State Department approved a Foreign Military Sale to South Korea for 120 AIM-120C-7/C-8 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM). The estimated cost is around $253 million. The missiles will arm South Korea’s F-15, F-16 and F-35 aircraft. The proposed sale also includes containers; weapon support and support equipment; spare and repair parts; and other related elements of logistical and program support. The principal contractor is Raytheon, and there are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with the potential sale. The AIM-120 AMRAAM missile is a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile capable of all-weather day-and-night operation. The fire-and-forget weapon employs active radar guidance and incorporates a datalink to guide the missile to a point where its active radar turns on to intercept the target.

Bangladesh is said to be interested in acquiring the AH-64 attack helicopter, local media reports. Anonymous US officials say two helicopters were proposed to Bangladesh and the Apache was chosen. They added that the Bangladesh government will have to decide whether to approve the request put up by the Bangladesh Air Force. Both countries are currently negotiating two agreements that are required by the US law for the purchase to go ahead that will expand the military cooperation between the countries.
