Acte 2 : Une vie politique accomplie dépréciée par la France

Sylvanus Olympio avait un penchant à peine voilé au système anglo-saxon. Cette anglophilie préoccupait vraiment le pouvoir français qui lui préfère son challenger Nicolas Grunitzky, leader du Parti togolais du progrès, plus proche de l'administration coloniale française, qui le désigna chef du gouvernement togolais en septembre 1956 jusqu'aux élections d'avril 1958.
Pendant ce temps, Sylvanus Olympio était mis aux arrêts par les autorités coloniales françaises sous le fallacieux prétexte de trafic de devises.
Mais en avril 1958, lors des élections législatives, les électeurs togolais avaient voté massivement pour les indépendantistes.
Sylvanus Olympio est amnistié par l'Assemblée nationale de la République autonome du Togo sortie des urnes, et en est nommé le premier ministre.
En septembre 1958, quand Charles de Gaulle a repris le pouvoir, Sylvanus Olympio se rend à Paris pour s'entretenir avec lui, et engage à son retour au Togo le processus d'indépendance du pays, qui est fixée le 27 avril 1960.
Après la proclamation de l'indépendance, Sylvanus Olympio accentua les liens bilatéraux avec l'Allemagne et les États-Unis. Les États-Unis fournissent des aides alimentaires et financières, et approuvent l'ambition d'autonomie économique du Togo. Ce que la France ne voyait pas d'un bon œil.
Et d'ailleurs, Sylvanus Olympio ne cachait pas ses intentions vis-à-vis de la France. En mai 1960, il avait confié à l'AFP qu'il ferait de tout son possible pour que son pays se passe de la France.
