The controversial issue of ‘front-of-pack nutrition labelling’ (FOP labelling) has been high on the agenda of those following European food labelling issues for many years. With half of adults in the European Union being overweight and with many health problems related to unhealthy diets, making the healthy choice the easy choice for consumers has been advocated as one of the means that could help to solve problems. Front-of-pack nutrition labelling is simplified nutrition information provided on the front of food packaging, aiming to help consumers with their food choices. Under the current EU rules, the indication of nutrition information on the front of packaging is not mandatory but could be provided on a voluntary basis.

Some Member States have already introduced voluntary schemes to help consumers to identify healthier products. The Commission announces in its new ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy, launched in May 2020, that it will propose a mandatory harmonised front-of‑pack nutrition labelling system by the end of 2022. Consumer and health associations broadly consider that FOP nutrition labelling plays a key role in helping consumers make more informed, healthier food choices. There is, however, also criticism of such schemes, arguing that they are over-simplified and can mislead consumers.

In its resolution on the European Green Deal, adopted in January 2020, the European Parliament welcomes the plan for a sustainable food system strategy, as well as the Commission’s intention to explore new ways to give consumers better information, and calls on the Commission to consider improved food labelling.

PRAGUE, 10 September 2020 – “Corruption shrinks tax revenue, distorts markets, hampers trade and investment and deepens inequalities. Every time illegal private gain wins out against the public good, it weakens our social fabric. Our objective is nothing short of zero tolerance for corruption,” said Albania’s Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of Albania Gent Cakaj, while opening the 2020 OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum today in Prague.

The two-day Forum focuses on preventing and combating corruption through innovation, increased transparency and digitalization in the OSCE region. It gathered senior government officials and experts from academia, NGOs, international organizations and the private sector of the 57 OSCE participating States.

“Vast sums of money that should be spent on vital public services – education, health care, social services and all-important infrastructure – end up in the pockets of the corrupt,” said Cakaj. “As we face the economic fall-out of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is our moral duty to re-double our efforts to prevent and combat corruption in order to guarantee the effective and efficient utilization of public funds in tackling this unprecedented crisis.”

Throughout 2020, the OSCE addressed corruption in parallel with good governance: the other side of the corruption coin.

Tuula Yrjölä, OSCE Officer in Charge/Secretary General, Director of Conflict Prevention Centre, said that the impact of technology on security, economic and environmental issues, is a discussion worth promoting across the OSCE’s comprehensive agenda. “We can only benefit from being proactive in addressing challenges and opportunities related to this area. Leveraging the power of innovation can be a great resource for enhancing security, stability and prosperity for us all.”

Tomáš Petříček, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Czech Republic, said that corruption affects to a greater or lesser extent all the OSCE participating States, including his own. “We must prevent and combat corruption in a comprehensive way and ensure involvement of civil society and the private sector. It is necessary to strengthen the OSCE tools and commitments at the Ministerial Council in December in Tirana, in order to be able to fight this scourge more effectively.”

Marina Sereni, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Keith Krach, Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, U.S Department of State, Jean-Luc Lemahieu, Director of Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (UNODC), and Professor Paola Severino, Special Representative of the Chairperson-in-Office on Combating Corruption gave keynote speeches.

In conclusion, Cakaj said that without good governance there can be no sustainable victories in the fight against corruption. “We need good governance to achieve our shared 2030 sustainable development goals in relation to economic growth, environmental protection, transparency and the prevention of corruption,” he said.   

The fight against corruption is one of Albania’s 2020 OSCE Chairmanship key priorities.

Les pluies diluviennes ont eu pour conséquence la destruction de plusieurs cultures et des pertes en vies humaines dans les pays du Sahel. Dans un entretien accordé à RFI, Guillaume Favreau, Hydrologue et représentant de l'Institut pour la recherche et le développement au Niger a abordé les causes de ces pluies torrentielles.

« La situation est exceptionnelle. Pour nous qui travaillons au Niger depuis plusieurs dizaines d'années, on n'avait jamais vu cela », a déclaré Guillaume Favreau. L'hydrologue et représentant de l'Institut pour la recherche et le développement au Niger a fait part des causes liées à la saison des pluies de cette année avec une pluviométrie plus importante.
« Il y a une intensification des précipitations qui est constatée par les observations et prédite également et cela concerne toute l'Afrique de l'Ouest », a-t-il à RFI.
S'agissant des causes locales, il y a l'ensablement constaté par les habitants et qui est lié à l'érosion très importante des sols autour de Niamey dans un rayon d'une cinquantaine de kilomètres, la crue rouge de saison des pluies. Le spécialiste ajoute « le déboisement très important sur les rivières, sur les bassins versant des rivières Niamey, la Sirba, et le Dargole, qui sont de très grandes rivières qui vont jusqu'au Burkina et massivement déforestées comme partout au Sahel et particulièrement autour de Niamey pour le charbon de bois et le bois de feu ».
A l'en croire les mines d'or et les activités rurales qui déforestent rendent certains versants très ruisselants et cela apporte massivement de l'eau. Tous ces facteurs justifient « l'abondance des crues notamment de la rive droite ».
Face à la situation, l'hydrologue Guillaume Favreau préconise des actions à court et à long termes. « Il y a des actions à court terme, l'endiguement, mais il faut qu'il soit réalisé dans les règles de l'art et également des actions à long terme de reboisement de ces bassins versants », a-t-il indiqué.
Il faut selon lui, « une prise en compte que la déforestation à long terme a des actions qui sont bien visibles désormais et qui font que des événements de cette ampleur, hélas, ont une probabilité plus forte dans les années à venir de se produire que par le passé ».

D'importants dégâts au Niger et au Nigéria

Les inondations ont causé des dégâts importants au Niger et au Nigéria dont la perte des cultures de riz. A Niamey plus de 5 500 hectares ont été détruits par les inondations.
Selon l'Association des riziculteurs nigérians, rapporté par RFI, l'État de Kebbi, frontalier avec le Niger, a perdu 450 000 hectares de rizières soit deux millions de tonnes de riz en moins sur les huit millions de tonnes prévues cette année.
L'État de Kano, Enugu, Jigawa et Nasarawa sont aussi concernés par les dommages causés par les inondations.

Découverte macabre ce mercredi 09 septembre 2020 à Padé, une localité de la commune de Kandi. Le gardien d'une ferme a été retrouvé mort, et sa langue coupée.

M. Kora selon l'ABP, a été attaqué par des individus non encore identifiés. Les hors la loi après l'avoir tué, lui ont coupé la langue. Selon le site d'informations, la victime est originaire de Béroubouay, une localité de la commune de Bembèrèkè.
Une enquête a été ouverte afin d'appréhender les auteurs de ce crime.
