In the context of the fight against impunity, the European Parliament has always been a strong supporter of the ICC as an impartial and independent multilateral institution mandated to deliver justice to the victims of international crimes (crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide). The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss latest developments of the international criminal justice architecture in a changing geopolitical landscape.
Judge Tomoko Akane, from Japan, pursued a career in law and criminal justice at jurisdictional and academic top level. In March 2024 Tomoko Akane was appointed as the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), becoming the first Japanese national to hold this position.
