Study - Land Grabbing and Human Rights: The Involvement of European Corporate and Financial Entities in Land Grabbing outside the European Union - PE 578.007 - Subcommittee on Human Rights

In early research on land grabbing, the initial focus was on foreign companies investing abroad, with a particular focus on those based in countries such as China, Gulf States, South Korea, and India. In recent years, it has become evident that the range of countries land investors originate in is far broader, and includes both North Atlantic - and EU-based actors. In this study, we offer both quantitative and qualitative data illustrating the involvement of EU-based corporate and financial entities in land deals occurring outside of the EU. This study also analyses the global land rush within a human rights framework, examining the implications of particular land deals involving EU-based investors and their impact on communities living in areas where the investments are taking place. The research presented here builds partly on Cotula’s 2014 study on the drivers and human rights implications of land grabbing, but differs in that it focuses explicitly on particular cases of possible, actual or potential human rights abuses and violations, in the context of activities involving European corporate and financial entities. In our conclusions, we offer a series of recommendations on how the EU can more effectively address these issues.

The Era of Revisionism (I)

German Foreign Policy (DE/FR/EN) - Tue, 10/05/2016 - 00:00
(Own report) - On the 71st Anniversary of Europe's liberation from the Nazi's reign of terror, currently pro-western Ukraine's leading historian - responsible for the official narrative on history - denies that principal Ukrainian nationalist organizations were collaborating with the Nazis and participated in the Holocaust. In a recent commentary, Volodymyr Viatrovych, Director of the "Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance" calls accusations of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) having collaborated with the Nazi-aggressors, "xenophobia," and the allegation that they had participated in the Holocaust and committed mass murder among the Polish population, "characteristic of Soviet propaganda." The Ukrainian historian wrote his commentary in response to an article published in the US magazine "Foreign Policy." The article sharply criticized Ukraine's growing revisionism - a revisionism that had already been promoted during pro-western President Viktor Yushchenko's term of office and further accentuated in the aftermath of the pro-western coup in 2014. "Foreign Policy," which has always been loyal to Kiev's putschist regime, now warns that Ukraine "could be headed for a new, and frightening, era of censorship."
