Irán ha sido el país que mejor ha aprovechado el desorden actual en el que se encuentra Oriente Medio para expandir su influencia regional. Teherán lo ha llevado a cabo proporcionando apoyo político, militar y financiero a sus aliados y proxies en Bahréin Irak, Líbano, Siria y Yemen. Sin embargo, esta expansión de la influencia iraní tiene un coste. El haber apoyado principalmente a grupos chíies, por ejemplo, ha dañado su imagen como potencia panislámica en el mundo árabe, que es predominantemente suní. Asimismo, el régimen revolucionario de Teherán no parece dispuesto a atenuar su antipatía ideológica hacia EE UU y sus aliados en Oriente Medio. Es por ello que, a pesar del posible acuerdo nuclear, es poco probable que se vuelvan a normalizar los lazos con EE UU, a la vez que la relación con Arabia Saudí, su rival a nivel regional, podría deteriorarse aún más.
