1989 novemberében olyan eseményre került sor, amely minden bizonnyal mind a német nép, mind a (már haldokló) szovjet tömb történelmében példa nélküli: egy miniszter nyilvánosan megnevettette a hallgatóságát, szándékolatlanul. Felettébb kínos volt, hogy ráadásul pont Erich Mielke elvtárs csinált magából sikeresen bohócot, kb. annyira otthonosan viselkedve egy nem kontrollált közönség előtt, mint egy partra vetett hal, pedig az állambiztonság fejeként neki kellett volna az utolsó pillanatig is a keletnémet állam legrettegettebb (bár kétségtelenül legfeljebb csak második) szolgájának lennie.

Az incidens bizonyára azért is maradt meg a németek emlékezetében, mert a posztszocialista átmenet idején - legalábbis annak kezdeti szakaszában - örömteli fejleményekre sor került ugyan, humorosakra viszont annál kevésbé. Ezek után már valószínűleg csak idő kérdése volt, hogy a proletár származású, szigorú kémfőnök kulcsszereplőként jelenjen meg egy Kleo című, akcióvígjáték műfajú helyi Netflix-sorozatban (2022-24).
