Do We Need the V4?

The past, present and possible alternatives of the Visegrad Cooperation
Dr. habil. András István Türke (HDR/Privatdozent)
EuVI Analysis, 9 May 2026

Hungary's new government, which will take office on May 13, 2026, with Prime Minister Péter Magyar and Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, promises a turnaround in foreign policy. It seems that cooperation with Poland will be a pillar of paramount importance. Now is the time to review the system of relations in the Central and Eastern European region. And from a Hungarian perspective, to ask the question: is it advisable for the new Hungarian foreign policy line to continue the current cooperation structures at all costs?
The study aims to focus on the context of the Visegrád Cooperation in relation to this main question. The V4 is a respectable initiative, but it would be important to finally treat it in its proper place. Some of its elements should be retained, while others should perhaps be let go of by Hungary and it should concentrate on building a new alliance system.
