Először az E-2-es készült el, majd szárnyainak, hajtóműveinek, légcsavarjainak, futóműveinek, vezérsíkjainak felhasználásával és a törzs teljes áttervezésével a C-2-es. Bár általában nem ezek a típusok vannak az érdeklődés fókuszában, a hordozófedélzeti repülőezred, mint komplex rendszer működése szempontjából nélkülözhetetlen gépekről beszélhetünk.
