The article examines how citizens’ expectations in social contracts lead them to take to the streets for contentious collective action. It draws on original, nationally representative telephone surveys in Tunisia and Lebanon that we commissioned in late 2020 and unpacks popular preferences about the social contract and states’ obligations to deliver social service provision, protection, and political participation. We measure empirically whether participation in protest can be explained predominantly by people’s grievances with their states’ social contract obligations or the position of people in society. Findings reveal intriguing differences between the two countries, but also among social groups within societies. We find that socially privileged people are more likely to take to the streets in pursuit of their demands, lending support to theories that identify society’s middle classes as drivers of protest action. We believe that the article’s findings will have significant implications for studies of contentious state society relations in the MENA region and beyond.

Ahogy látszólag elég illogikus volt Olaszország első világháborúba való belépése korábbi szövetségesei ellen, ugyanolyan érthetetlennek tűnik, hogy 1940-ben annak az országnak az oldalán léptek ismét háborúba, melyet Mussolini alig öt évvel korábban még „a gyilkosok és a pederaszták országának” nevezett, uralkodó ideológiájáról pedig kijelentette, hogy az „az őserdei germán törzsek forradalma Róma latin civilizációja ellen”.

Nagyrészt az ő szűklátókörűségük és beképzeltségük sodorta át Mussolinit annak az embernek az oldalára, akit nem sokkal korábban még „borzalmas szexuális degeneráltnak” minősített, és akit 1934-es találkozójuk után röviden így jellemzett: „Micsoda bohóc!”

Akármennyire is megvetette Hitlert, Mussolini mindig is elismerte az első világháború utáni békeszerződések igazságtalanságát, és szorgalmazta azok revízióját, már csak azért is, hogy Németország jogos követeléseit legalább részben kielégítve kihúzzák a német nacionalizmus és revansizmus méregfogát. 1933-ban egy négyhatalmi konferencia összehívását javasolta, melyen Anglia, Franciaország, Olaszország és Németország részvételével megvitatták volna a békeszerződések felülvizsgálatát, és békés korrekcióját. A javaslatot, melyhez a Duce nagy reményeket fűzött, Anglia és Franciaország azonnal elutasította, és élénken tiltakoztak ellene a háború legnagyobb nyertesei, a puszta létezésüket is a versaillesi szerződéseknek köszönhető kisantant államok is.

Délaissées par les pouvoirs publics, les personnes sans solution d’hébergement ne cessent d’être plus nombreuses à devoir survivre dans les rues de Paris. Selon le nouveau bilan de la Nuit de la solidarité, publié mercredi 18 février, 3 857 personnes ont été recensées dans la capitale et 1 083 dans 33 communes de la métropole.
