Ahead of the upcoming EU-China Summit in Brussels, the DROI meeting on 16 July featured an exchange of views on the human rights situation in China. Civil society representatives with extensive expertise on the country joined the panel to assess the current state of affairs and shared their input on the road ahead concerning the human rights dimension of the EU-China relationship.

On 14 July, Denmark - the EU Member State currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union - announced its donation of satellite communication services to Ukraine via the European Defence Agency.

The donation includes solutions that increase Ukraine’s access to secure and stable satellite-based communications, such as receiver terminals that will contribute to the country’s ability to defend itself. These terminals will ensure robust and secure connectivity, which can be crucial for the conduct of military operations. Secure and stable satellite-based communications solutions remain in high demand by Ukraine.

The framework provided by EDA can help diversify satellite communication service usage over Ukraine. Such a donation contributes to promoting both Ukraine’s and Europe’s technological strategic autonomy and freedom of action in space. Satellites play a crucial role in modern defence today. Other EU countries may be considering similar donations.

The agency also works closely with the European defence industry to strengthen Europe’s technological and industrial base.

A sorozat harmadik, záró részében folytatjuk a beszélgetést Peter Hunttal, előtte azonban ejtsünk néhány szót magáról az A-6-os típusról.

A Grumman A-6 Intruder a hidegháború szülötte volt. Azért készült, hogy áthatoljon a Szovjetunió és szövetségesei által felállított, radarokból, vadászgépekből, rakétákból, és csöves fegyverekből álló integrált légvédelmi rendszeren és bombáit a célpontra juttassa. Fegyverterhelését tekintve, hidat képezett a vadászbombázók és a nehézbombázók között, alkalmas volt hagyományos és nukleáris csapásmérésre, aknatelepítésre, közvetlen légi támogatásra és precíziós bombák alkalmazására. A gép egyik lelke a térképező radar és az inerciális navigációs rendszer kombinációja volt, a másik a pilótából és bombázótiszt-navigátorból álló kétfős személyzet. Egymás melletti elhelyezésük és ennek kommunikációs előnyei - látták egymás kézmozdulatait és testbeszédét is – a haditengerészeten belül a leghatékonyabb párossá tették az A-6-os személyzeteket. Miután a hagyományosan nagy magasságban operáló bombázók dolgát a légvédelmi rakéták igencsak megnehezítették, az Intruderek személyzetét arra képezték ki, hogy a célt nagy sebességgel, kis magasságon, éjjel-nappal, bármilyen időjárási körülmények között megközelítsék és elpusztítsák. A rakéták jelentette veszély kis magasságon sem szűnt meg teljesen, ráadásul a gépek a csöves légvédelem fegyverei elé kerültek. Védelmüket zavarótöltetek kivetése és az agresszív manőverezés jelentette, miközben az ellenség abban bízott, hogy a személyzet figyelmét annyira leköti a lelövés elkerülése, hogy a földnek ütköznek. Azt, hogy a hajózók ezt elkerüljék és készségszintre fejlesszék a kismagasságú repülést, a nyugati parti századok a Washington államból Oregonba átnyúló Cascade-hegységben gyakoroltak. A Whidbey Island tengerészeti légibázisról felszálló A-6-os kirepült a tenger fölé, hogy a repülőgép-hordozóról való indulást szimulálja, majd a partvonalat 800 km/h-s sebességgel keresztezve berepült a hegyek közé, és a völgyekben manőverezve mintegy negyvenöt perces repülés után közelítette meg az oregoni lőtéren lévő célpontját. A kismagasságú repülésnek és a nagy túlterheléssel járó agresszív manőverezésnek megvolt az ára. Az idő előrehaladtával, egyes gépek szárnyában repedések keletkeztek, de ezek csak akkor derültek ki, amikor a szárny leszakadt, a gép lezuhant és a személyzet életét vesztette. Mivel az Intrudernek fegyverterhelés és hatótáv szempontjából a nyolcvanas években nem volt váltótípusa, a végleges megoldásig a haditengerészet civil alvállalkozó bevonásával új, kompozit szárnyak felszerelése mellett döntött. Arról is döntés született, hogy a gépeken képességnövelő korszerűsítést hajtanak végre. Ez volt a SWIP (Systems Weapons Improvement Program), amellyel a gép immár földi és tengeri célok illetve lokátor elleni rakétákat is indíthatott. A SWIP-gépek egy része megkapta a kompozit szárnyakat, a többin maradtak a fémépítésűek.
