A kijevi vezetés további nemzetközi fegyveres támogatását sürgette az amerikai szövetségi törvényhozás Ukrajnában járt küldöttségét vezető Lindsey Graham republikánus szenátor.

A politikus a múlt heti látogatást összegezve úgy fogalmazott, hogy az ukrajnai háború fordulóponthoz érkezett, amelyben a harckocsik központi kérdéssé váltak. A küldöttség meggyőződött arról, hogy az ukrán hadseregnek nehézjárművekre – német Leopard, valamint amerikai Abrams harckocsikra – van szüksége – mondta, hozzátéve: Kelet-Ukrajnában nem sikerülhet az orosz erők visszaszorítása harcjárművek nélkül.

A politikus emellett nagy hatótávolságú rakéták küldését is szorgalmazta az orosz ellentámadás megállítása érdekében, amely Bahmut közelében orosz előrehaladást hozott.

Graham célnak nevezte az oroszok kiszorítását Ukrajnából az ukrán erőknek adott olyan fegyverzet segítségével, amellyel a hadszíntéren képesek legyőzni az orosz hadsereget. Ahogy fogalmazott, “nem cél amerikai katonákat küldeni Ukrajnába, és nem cél a harmadik világháború kirobbantása sem, hanem az a cél, hogy megállítsák a támadást, és kiszorítsák Oroszországot Ukrajnából, és felelősségre vonják” a cselekedetei miatt. Egyben felszólította az amerikai védelmi minisztériumot, hogy vizsgálja felül álláspontját az Abramsokat illetően, ugyanis ezek küldése mintaként is szolgálna Németország számára.

Graham az ukrán kormányt érintő korrupciós botránnyal kapcsolatos kérdésre válaszolva hangsúlyozta: elvárják, hogy Ukrajna megtegye az ígért lépéseket a korrupció megfékezésére és megváltoztassa törvényeit. A szenátor egy hosszú út kezdetéről beszélt, amelynek során az üzleti gyakorlat megváltozik Ukrajnában. Hozzátette, hogy az Ukrajna felé irányuló fegyverszállításokért felelős amerikai katonai vezetés az átláthatóságot és elszámoltathatóságot tartja szem előtt.

A kongresszus felsőházi küldöttsége a múlt héten járt Ukrajnában, ahol mások mellett találkozott Volodimir Zelenszkij elnökkel is. A küldöttségben a republikánus Graham mellett Richard Blumenthal és Sheldon Whitehouse demokrata szenátor kapott helyett.
