Az áldozatok családtagjai, túlélők, városi vezetők és sportolók, köztük idei indulók emlékeztek Bostonban, az amerikai város híres maratonján 2013-ban végrehajtott merénylet áldozataira szombaton, két nappal az idei esemény előtt.

A résztvevők a merénylet helyén kialakított emlékműnél néma főhajtással tisztelegtek az áldozatok emléke előtt. Az emlékmű három kőoszlop, amely a robbantás három halálos áldozatára emlékeztet a világ legrégibb utcai futóversenyének célvonala közelében. 2013. április 15-én, a verseny idején, a szurkolók tömegében robbant két házilag készített robbanószer, amelyben három ember, köztük egy nyolc éves gyerek halt meg és 260-an megsebesültek.

A merénylőket, egy csecsen származású amerikai állampolgárságú testvérpárt, a hatóságok három nappal később azonosították, majd egy nappal később, több ezer rendőrt mozgósítva, hajtóvadászat után fogták el Bostonban. Egyikük, Tamerlan Carnajev, a rendőrökkel vívott tűzpárbaj, illetve azután halt meg, hogy testvére és tettestársa menekülés közben egy lopott autóval elgázolta. Dzsohar Carnajevet, további üldözést követően, lőtt sebekkel fogták el Boston egyik elővárosában, ahol egy ház udvarán álló hajóban rejtőzött el.

A férfit a bíróság halálra ítélte, aminek végrehajtása ellen kérvényt nyújtott be. Az ügy a fellebbezési bíróság előtt van Bostonban, ahol a három tagú bírói tanács legutóbb januárban tartott meghallgatást a 29 éves terrorista ügyében.

Az idei, 127. Boston Maratont ma tartják a Massachusetts állambeli nagyvárosban.
