Alors que la Suède continue d’attendre la prochaine étape de son processus de candidature à l’OTAN et qu’aucune nouvelle réunion avec la Hongrie ou la Turquie n’est prévue, la Finlande poursuit sa démarche d’adhésion à l’Alliance.

On 21 March 2023, DROI will hold a public hearing on "The state of human rights in Algeria in the framework of the renewed partnership with the Southern Neighbourhood" to discuss recent developments in the field of human rights and the rule of law in Algeria. It will be held in association with the standing delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries (DMAG). The hearing will take place in room Spinelli 3G-2 from 11:00.

On 21 March 2023, DROI will hold a public hearing on "The state of human rights in Algeria in the framework of the renewed partnership with the Southern Neighbourhood" to discuss recent developments in the field of human rights and the rule of law in Algeria. The hearing will be held in association with the standing delegation for relations with the Maghreb countries (DMAG).

Algeria is a key strategic partner for the EU in the Southern Neighbourhood, notably in view of the adoption of The New Agenda for the Mediterranean. Both the EU and Algeria have committed to achieve the objectives of the EU-Algeria Association Agreement and to implement the common partnership priorities, notably on the political dialogue, governance, rule of law and promotion of human rights.

The Subcommittee will discuss the situation of human rights in the country with Dr Dalia Ghanem (EUISS, expert on Algeria) and Mr Saïd Salhi (human rights defender, Vice-President of the dissolved Algerian League for the Defence of Human Rights), as well as with Mr. Abdelmadjid Zaalani, President of Algeria's National Human Rights Council.

Momentum is building globally for the establishment of an International Anti-Corruption Court (IACC).
On 20 March, DROI will host a workshop to discuss recent developments of the IACC proposal as well as other mechanisms for enhancing accountability for acts of grand corruption, with Professor Cedric Ryngaert (Utrecht University), Judge Mark L. Wolf (Integrity Initiatives International), Juanita Olaya Garcia, (UNCAC Coalition) and Juan Francisco Sandoval (former head of the Special Prosecutor's Office Against Impunity, Guatemala).

In 2022, the Human Rights Subcommittee decided to prepare a Recommendation to the Council, the Commission and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on how to respond to undemocratic elections by strengthening the human right to participate in public affairs. On 25 January 2023, a Workshop was organised on behalf of the Human Rights Subcommittee to discuss the challenge of elections in authoritarian countries from a human rights perspective. It focused on authoritarian leaders’ strategies to enhance their legitimacy and undermine international democracy standards, as well as proposals for further refining the EU’s human rights and democracy support toolbox. This report brings together the background briefings prepared for the workshop and a summary of the debate with Members, academics and EU representatives.
