Sous-commission Droits de l'homme (DROI) - Parlement européen

The Subcommittee will hold an exchange of views a year after the Council decision to lift most human rights related sanctions on Belarus. Speakers will include Mr Miklós Haraszti UN Special Rapporteur, Ms Lubov Kovaleva, member of the coalition "Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus" and mother of a prisoner executed in 2012, Mr Andrei Paluda, legal expert and long-time civic activist and Mr Valiantsin Stefanovich, expert of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna”.

L'interdiction de l’administration américaine à l’encontre des citoyens de sept pays musulmans de pénétrer aux États-Unis "peut sérieusement saper les efforts mondiaux actuels en faveur d'un partage équitable des responsabilités internationales concernant les réfugiés", ont déclaré mardi les députés des commissions du développement et des affaires étrangères.

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Monday 6 February 2017 from 9.00 - 12.30 in room PHS 1A002.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

Pier Antonio PANZERI (S&D, IT) will chair the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) for the next two and a half years, decided committee members by acclamation on Wednesday morning, 25 January.
The four vice-chairs elected by the Subcommittee on Human Rights are:

• 1st vice-chair Cristian Dan PREDA (EPP, RO)
• 2nd vice-chair Beatriz BECERRA BASTERRECHEA (ALDE, ES)
• 3rd vice-chair László TŐKÉS (EPP, HU)
• 4th vice-chair Barbara LOCHBIHLER (Greens/EFA, DE)

on the fight against impunity and non-state actors' accountability for human rights violations
The exchange of views will highlight the instruments for ensuring that all perpetrators of human rights violations in the context of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are being hold accountable. It will also illustrate still existing gaps in the fight against impunity for such crimes.

The invited speakers will focus on human rights abuses against civilians committed by the Syrian regime and other parties of the Syrian conflict.

Workshop : Human Rights in Iran after the nuclear deal - business as usual or time for change
The Policy Department of the Directorate General for External Policies is holding a workshop for the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) and the Delegation for relations with Iran(D-IR) on 24 January 2017. Chaired by Elena Valenciano, Chair of DROI and Janusz Lewandowski, Chair of D-IR, the workshop will focus on the recent trends in the human rights situation in Iran and in particular on the way the EU could promote change.

The European Parliament Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, chaired by Heidi Hautala, in association with the Subcommittee on Human Rights, chaired by Elena Valenciano, held a conference on conflict areas in the Eastern Partnership and the situation of human rights.
The objective of the Conference is to examine the impact of protracted conflicts on the exercise of human rights and fundamental freedoms in parts of the Eastern Partnership area.
