On 5 December, SEDE Members will have an exchange of views with the first-ever European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius on the important topic of EU defence at the time when the EU faces urgent and long-term challenges to its defence, including the cooperation with NATO and in view of the White Paper on Defence to be presented in the first 100 days in office. ...
The day before, on 4 December, Deputy Secretary General for Peace, Security and Defence Charles Fries will brief the Members on priorities following the Foreign Affairs Council-Defence of 19 November 2024. In addition, SEDE will also hold an exchange of views on Ukrainian women veterans, in the framework of the forthcoming European Parliament Gender Equality week. It will be an opportunity to hear what is currently in place to support women veterans in Ukraine but also an occasion for Ukrainian women veterans to share their own experience, their struggles and their recommendations to ensure their reintegration into society.

On 17 October, SEDE Members will discuss the Annual Report on the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) presented by the Rapporteur MEP Nicolás Pascual de la Parte (EPP, Spain). ...
While the EU is facing multiple and unprecedented threats to its security and new crises in its neighbourhood, especially since Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, this first CSDP Annual Report of the 10th Parliamentary term will set out the European Parliament's assessment of CSDP's readiness to address the challenges in the current complex geopolitical and security context. It also provides recommendations on the main avenues for strengthening policies and actions for the future along several dimensions, including institutional decision-making progress, the joint development of military and armament capabilities and the urgently needed issue of how to finance European defence.

The constitutive meeting of the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) took place in Brussels on 23 July 2024 following the appointment of members in the plenary sitting of 16-19 July 2024. At the constitutive meeting, Marie-Agnes STRACK-ZIMMERMANN (Renew, Germany) was elected as SEDE Chair. Four Vice-Chairs were also elected for a two-and-a-half year mandate.

The next meeting of the SEDE Subcommittee is scheduled to take place place on Wednesday, 4 September 2024 from 14.30 to 18.30hrs in room SPINELLI 1E2 (Brussels).
