In light of the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, the EU has adopted sanctions against six Russian individuals under the chemical weapons sanctions regime. In June, listings of seven individuals and one entity were also adopted under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime, which was established because of the internal oppression in Russia.
Today, 7 July 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russia's Chargé d'Affaires ad interim and presented a note of protest, categorically condemning the blatantly false statements about Latvia made publicly on 4 July 2026 by the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia, Mikhail Galuzin. Despite Latvia's consistent and clearly stated official position that Latvia has not opened its airspace for carrying out any attacks, as well as the joint statement by the foreign ministers of the Baltic states on 10 April of this year, the Russian side continues to spread lies and escalate the situation. Latvia rejects Russia's claims as completely unfounded and demands that the Russian side immediately retract this false information.
