On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights stated: “Today we pay tribute to the strength and resilience of all those men, women and children who have been forced to flee their homes because of violence, persecution, war and natural disasters. I am shocked by the levels of displacement currently on record. Around 65.5 million people around the world have been forced from their homes..."

The Policy Department of the Directorate General for External Policies is organising a workshop for the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), in association with the Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE). Venue : Thursday 28 June, from 09:00 - 11:00, PHS 4B001, Brussels

The workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss international trends as regards the concept of universal jurisdiction, the EU's approach to promoting universal jurisdiction through its external relations and concrete experiences in EU Member States.

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Wednesday 11 July from 09.00 - 12.30 and 14.30 - 18.30 and on Thursday 12 July 2018 from 9.00 - 12.30 in room ASP - A3G-3.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

Reiterating the EU's long-standing opposition to the death penalty, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), stated:

"I condemn in the strongest terms the execution of Mr Yavar Mohammad Salas, Gonabadi dervish, in Iran yesterday. He was sentenced to imprisonment and execution on murder charges and his sentence was later upheld by the Supreme Court. Numerous legal and procedural violations occurred during the pre-trial and trial process..."

Alarmed by the worsening human and trade union rights situation in Somalia, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Mr Pier Antonio Panzeri made the following statement: “I am alarmed by the threats and intimidations coupled with a smear campaign against the Secretary General of the Somali trade union ‘National Union of Somali Journalists’ (NUSOJ), Mr Omar Faruk Osman, who is also General Secretary of the ‘Federation of Somali Trade Unions’ (FESTU)....
Other union leaders and activists are also targeted for standing up and defending freedom of expression, freedom of association and freedom of assembly. Somalia's unjustifiable anti-trade union campaign must stop. Full text below

Following the arrest of Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh, EP Vice President Heidi Hautala (Greens/EFA, FI) and Chair of the Subcommittee on human Rights (DROI), Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), stated: "Yesterday Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested in her home in Tehran, Iran, and was reportedly transferred to Evin prison. We strongly condemn her arrest and call on the Iranian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release her.

Ms Sotoudeh is a tireless and outspoken human rights lawyer who has pursued her fully legitimate and peaceful professional activity, defending her clients with determination and courage. She had already paid a high price for her human rights work in previous years, including an unfair and unjustified prison sentence between 2010 and 2013, as well as a travel ban and limitations on her professional activity.

The European Parliament's election observation missions aim at strengthening, in third countries concerned by elections or referendums, the legitimacy of national electoral processes, increasing public confidence in elections, avoiding electoral fraud, better protecting human rights and contributing to conflict solution. Elections are one of the defining bases of a functioning democracy.
Actions supporting transparent, inclusive and participatory elections can make a major contribution to democratization, peace, security and conflict prevention around the world, particularly in fragile, post-conflict or developing regions.

The EU's commitment to stepping up its efforts to promote democracy was reiterated in the Strategic Framework and Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council in 2012. The Action Plan included a plan for a more systematic follow-up to the reports of EU election observation missions (EOMs), so as to support the full electoral cycle. This hearing will address the link between human rights and democracy support (via elections) based on the experience of the EoM deployed by the EU.
