In reaction to the sentencing to 7 years imprisonment of Nguyen Van Hoa, Vietnamese activist, Mr. Panzeri, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights stated:

"I have learnt with dismay of the 7 year sentence against Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa for expressing his views on this environmental disaster, which caused a very serious problem for the livelihood of fishermen in the Ha Tinh province. Last February I led a DROI mission to Vietnam and I raised the issue of the environmental contamination caused by the toxic discharge from the Taiwanese-owned steel plant (Formosa) with the authorities and I asked the government to respond to the concerns of its people.

In response to the verdict on the case of Taiwanese pro-democracy activist Lee Ming-che, the Chair of the EP Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT), stated:

"It is deplorable that Mr Lee Ming-che was handed down a five-year prison sentence for "subverting state power" by Yueyang City Intermediate People's Court in the People's Republic of China..."

In a hearing on freedom of religion or belief, Human Rights MEPs focused on the persecution of various religious minorities & were informed about the "rising tide of intolerance" worldwide.

The European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) today held a hearing on "Freedom of Religion or Belief: the situation of persecuted minorities, notably Christians", chaired by DROI Chair MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT). The hearing with several experts from different parts of the world focused on the persecution of various religious minorities, notably Christians, Shias and Rohingya.

Disappointed by the Bahrain court ruling rejecting Nabeel Rajab's appeal, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human rights, Mr Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT) stated:

"I am very alarmed by the Bahrain Court decision to uphold a two-year sentence against Nabeel Rajab for having given televised interviews in which he addressed Bahrain's poor human rights record. This decision goes against international law and his detention violates Nabeel Rajab's right to freedom of expression..."

The Chair of the DROI Subcommittee, Mr Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT) has welcomed the release of Ibrahim Halawa, an Irish citizen, detained in prison in Egypt for 4 years and stated: "The Egyptian court's decision to drop all charges against Ibrahim Halawa has reinforced our conviction about his arrest. We have always considered Mr. Halawa to be a prisoner of conscience, detained for having exercised his right to freedom of expression, and we have repeatedly called for his immediate and unconditional release. I am pleased to learn that what we have advocated for has been recognised by the courts and that Mr Halawa is now free...." Full text below

Highlights - High-level conference “Towards a renewed partnership with Africa” - Subcommittee on Human Rights

Parliament is inviting African leaders to Brussels on 22 November to discuss development ahead of the next EU-Africa summit. The conference is set to discuss issues such as peace and security, human rights, sustainable development and migration. African political leaders, African Union representatives and UN officials will debate with MEPs, Parliament President Tajani and Federica Mogherini, the EU's foreign affairs chief.

Latest news - Next DROI Meeting - Subcommittee on Human Rights

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Thursday 7 December from 9 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. in meeting room PHS 1A002.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.
