Highlights - Women’s rights and women's participation in the reconstruction process of Afghanistan - Subcommittee on Human Rights

mar, 15/06/2021 - 11:26
Members will discuss the situation in Afghanistan, and in particular the situation of women, with Afghan experts with extensive knowledge of the country. The peace process with the Taliban will be crucial for the reconstruction of Afghanistan, but the final agreement must not threaten basic human rights such as women’s access to education. In the meantime, the violence on the ground has increased, especially violence against women.

Highlights - Digital technologies as a means of repression and social control - Subcommittee on Human Rights

mar, 15/06/2021 - 09:44
Jointly with the Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the EU, including Disinformation (INGE). A study on the use of digital technologies for repression and social control will be presented to members on Wednesday 16 June at 13.45.
The Internet and electronic communication provides an important tool for citizens and activists to organise and communicate. But they are restricted and infiltrated with increasingly subtle and sophisticated means by authoritarian governments. Efforts have been made to tackle the challenges that digital technologies pose to human rights, but a lot remains to be done. The EU must enrich global legal and standard-setting efforts, as well as improve its own core foreign policy instruments.
