When Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák presented the Presidency priorities on enlargement in AFET, Chairman Elmar Brok stressed that the EU's door remains open for the enlargement countries but the key to enter is in their hands. He praised the constructive role of the incoming Slovak Presidency and expressed AFET's continued support for the enlargement process.
Minister Lajčák emphasised the transformative power of enlargement and that the EU should be able to deliver when enlargement countries are ready to join. He was of the view, however, that the current atmosphere within the EU is not very favourable for promoting the membership perspective. Members broadly agreed with his assessment and stressed the need to keep EU enlargement alive in a credible way. Beyond enlargement, issues such as visa liberalisation for Ukraine, Georgia and Kosovo, implications of Brexit, regional cooperation on the Western Balkans, migration as well as EU-NATO cooperation featured highly in the discussion.

A 9-strong MEP delegation from the Civil Liberties Committee will be in Calais on Wednesday 13 July to visit facilities for migrants and refugees, in the vicinity, which for years has been a gathering spot for people trying to cross from France to the UK. MEPs will meet with local authorities, NGOs, the French-British border authorities and the refugees and migrants themselves in order to assess the situation on the ground.

Anhörungen von Vertretern der Automobilindustrie.
