Council approves EU-UK agreement on fishing opportunities.

The EU issued a declaration on the deteriorating political situation in Nicaragua firmly condemning the actions of the Nicaraguan authorities against opposition parties, media, journalists and civil society, including the systematic detention and arrest of presidential candidates and opposition leaders.

At the press conference ahead of the G7 summit, under the UK presidency, European Council President Charles Michel expressed the wish that the G7 is capable of addressing today's biggest challenges: defeating COVID-19, ensuring a strong economic recovery, fighting climate change.

The Council today approved conclusions endorsing a new EU strategy on climate adaptation.

The EU issued a declaration on the ruling by a Moscow Court to label Alexei Navalny’s organisation and his regional offices “extremist groups” underlining that this act marks the most serious effort to date by the Russian Government to suppress the independent political opposition and anti-corruption investigations.

The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, represented by the Portuguese Presidency, signed the regulation establishing the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI-Global Europe).

The Council approved two sets of conclusions on the impact of the pandemic, one on internal security and a second on the threat posed by terrorism and violent extremism.

Recent terrorist attacks carried out across the EU have underlined the need to improve the protection of public spaces.

In these conclusions the Council emphasises the unique challenge to security posed by the UEFA EURO championship, since the competition will take place in 11 European cities simultaneously.
