The European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) visited the Socialist Republic of Vietnam 21 - 23 February. The main aim of the visit was to engage in a constructive dialogue with the Vietnamese authorities and to assess the human rights situation in the country. The delegation was headed by the Chair of the Subcommittee, Mr Panzeri. The Subcommittee issued a press release at the end of its visit.

The Chairs of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights, David McAllister (EPP, DE) and Pier Antonio Panzeri (S&D, IT) respectively, expressed their grave concern about and solidarity with Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López after the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the decision sentencing him to 14 years imprisonment. Highlights - DROI Delegation to Vietnam, 20-24 February 2017 - Subcommittee on Human Rights

The European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights will go to Vietnam from 20-24 February 2017 and the main objective of the DROI mission is to assess the human rights situation in the country. The DROI delegation, composed of Pier Antonio Panzeri, Head of the Delegation, S&D; Lars Adaktusson, EPP; Adam Kosa, EPP; Soraya Post, S&D; David Martin, S&D and Beatriz Becerra Basterrechea, ALDE, will hold meetings with National Assembly committees, government ministries, UN agencies, and NGOs.

Vietnam adopted a new constitution in 2013 and in 2015 the National Assembly passed new laws on the Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Law on Custody and Detention and Law on investigative bodies. However, their application has been postponed.

The Delegation will also raise the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and the human rights impact assessment with the Vietnamese authorities.

Latest news - Next DROI Meeting - Subcommittee on Human Rights

The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Thursday, 9 March 2017 from 9.00 - 12.30 in room ASP A5G-3.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

Highlights - Current human rights situation in Belarus - 6 February - Subcommittee on Human Rights

The Subcommittee will hold an exchange of views a year after the Council decision to lift most human rights related sanctions on Belarus. Speakers will include Mr Miklós Haraszti UN Special Rapporteur, Ms Lubov Kovaleva, member of the coalition "Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus" and mother of a prisoner executed in 2012, Mr Andrei Paluda, legal expert and long-time civic activist and Mr Valiantsin Stefanovich, expert of the Human Rights Centre “Viasna”.
