The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr Volker Türk, will address for the first time Members of DROI and LIBE during a joint meeting organised on Thursday 20 July. The meeting provides a timely opportunity to address human rights achievements and global challenges on the matter.
2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration which established the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The European Parliament remains strongly committed to supporting the independence of the OHCHR and its leadership role in protecting and promoting human rights across the globe.

The joint DROI and LIBE meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights will take place in Brussels (room 4Q1, Antall building) on Thursday, 20 July 2023, from 11.00-12.30.
The meeting will be streamed live on the EP Multimedia Centre webpage.

European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), in cooperation with the Legislative Dialogue Unit of the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments, organises a hybrid interparliamentary committee meeting with national parliaments on the topic ‘Coordination between EU delegations and EU Member State embassies on human rights in third countries’.
The aim of the meeting is to discuss how best to ensure that EU delegations and EU Member State embassies in third countries coordinate on human rights issues in order to promote EU values and positions in the world.

On 19 July 2023, DROI will hold a public hearing "The human rights impact of sourcing critical raw materials (sub-issue on Orinoco Mining Arc)". The hearing will be held in association with the Committee on Development (DEVE).
The EU's ambition to become a climate-neutral economy by 2050, and its ability to sustain the green and digital transitions and achieve strategic autonomy rely on reliable and secure access to critical raw materials (CRMs).

The hearing will examine the conditions guaranteeing that new strategies of EU sourcing of CRMs will not have a negative impact on respect for human rights, including labour rights, the rights of indigenous peoples and environmental protection. It will also discuss the opportunities offered by the sustainable development of CRM value chains and the measures that the EU must take in this regard to promote human rights in the world.

Guest speakers will highlight the situation of countries or regions where mining and extractive industries play a major economic role, in particular the Orinoco Mining Arc in Venezuela.

To mark World Refugee Day at the European Parliament, the LIBE, DEVE, and DROI Committees are jointly hosting an exchange of views, focusing on forgotten crises as well as the importance of inclusion and finding solutions for displaced people who have found refuge in a foreign country.
Members will have the opportunity to hear and discuss with a panel of guests composed of Mr Bahati Mnyci, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a refugee in Zimbabwe since 2003, who is now completing a Master's degree in Italy and will share his lived experience of forced displacement as well as the impact education has had throughout his life; Ms Yasmine Rockenfeller, Chief of Global Issues Unit in the UNHCR Brussels office; as well as Mr Francesco Luciani, Head of Unit for "Migration and Forced Displacement" in the Commission's Directorate-General for International Partnerships and Ms Esther Pozo Vera, Head of Unit for "Asylum" in the Commission's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs.
