In light of the detention of Sakharov Prize laureate Guillermo Fariñas in Cuba, Parliament Vice-President Heidi Hautala and the Chair of the Human Rights Subcommittee Maria Arena stated: "We learned with deep consternation that the Cuban authorities have arrested 2010 Sakharov Prize laureate Guillermo Fariñas and are detaining him in an unknown location. He was preparing to come to Brussels, invited by the European Parliament, to participate in a meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights.

We urge the Cuban authorities to ensure Guillermo Fariñas' fundamental rights and allow him to travel to Europe."

Statement by Maria Arena, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights. Reacting to UN experts' call for an investigation into allegations that the Saudi Crown Prince was involved in surveillance of The Washington Post owner and Amazon CEO, Jeffrey Bezos, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights Maria Arena stated: "I am astonished by the alleged Saudi hacking of Mr Bezos' mobile phone, as revealed by UN human rights experts..."

Following the International Court of Justices' decision to order Myanmar to take all measures in its power to protect the Rohingya minority from genocide, Maria Arena stated: "Thousands of Rohingya people have been killed or subjected to horrific violence over the past years. This decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) underscores the paramount importance of guaranteeing universal and equal enjoyment of human rights, with special attention to the most vulnerable...."

lham Tohti's daughter accepted the 2019 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought on Wednesday on behalf of her jailed father. Tohti, a Uyghur scholar fighting for the rights of China’s Muslim Uyghur minority, has been in prison since 2014 on separatism-related charges. “Ilham Tohti, with his activism, managed to give a voice to the Uyghurs. [...] He has been working for 20 years to promote dialogue and mutual understanding between them and other Chinese people,” EP President David Sassoli said.

The Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold an exchange of views with Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights, Council of Europe, at an extraordinary meeting on Thursday 16 January 2020, 9.00 - 10.00, Room: Louise Weiss (N1.3) in Strasbourg.

The next ordinary meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Wednesday 22 January from 09.00 to 12.30 and 14.30 to 18.30 and on Thursday 23 January from 09.00 to 12.30.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.
