A five-member strong delegation visited Kyrgyzstan from 25 to 27 February 2025 with the aim at conducting a constructive dialogue with the Kyrgyz authorities and a series of international and local stakeholders ahead of the consent procedure of the EU-Kyrgyzstan European Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, as the latter defines the respect for human rights, fundamental values, the rule of law and democratic standards as an essential element of this agreement.
The DROI mission visited the country in a politically important year for Kyrgyzstan and the relations between the EU and Central Asian countries, given that the 1st EU-Central Asia Summit of Heads of State and government will take place in Samarkand on 4-5 April 2025.

The European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), in collaboration with the Legislative Dialogue Unit of the Directorate for Relations with National Parliaments, is organising an interparliamentary committee meeting with national parliaments on the topic: "Coordination between the EU and its Member States in Strengthening the EU’s Role at the UN and Exchanging Best Practices in the Human Rights Field."
The meeting aims to explore strategies for enhancing and supporting the EU's role at the UN level while facilitating the exchange of best practices in the field of human rights.

In the context of the fight against impunity, the European Parliament has always been a strong supporter of the ICC as an impartial and independent multilateral institution mandated to deliver justice to the victims of international crimes (crimes against humanity, war crimes, genocide). The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss latest developments of the international criminal justice architecture in a changing geopolitical landscape.

Judge Tomoko Akane, from Japan, pursued a career in law and criminal justice at jurisdictional and academic top level. In March 2024 Tomoko Akane was appointed as the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), becoming the first Japanese national to hold this position.

The Subcommittee on Human Rights will hold an exchange of view on Syria: Truth, justice and accountability on 28 January 2025. Audience will have the chance to listen to victims led by civil society organizations representatives Yasmen Almashan and Mazen Darwish. In addition, the subcommittee is hosting Robert Petit, Head of the IIIM (International Impartial and Independent Mechanism) and will connect with Karla Quintana, Head of the new Independent Institution on Missing Persons (IIMP).

On Monday 27 January, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr Volker Türk will address the Members of DROI and AFET, for the first time this term. The meeting provides a timely opportunity to discuss the human rights situation in the world and the High Commissioner’s work at the UN level. The European Parliament remains strongly committed to supporting the independence of the Office of the High Commissioner and its leadership role in protecting and promoting human rights across the globe.
