The 6-Member SEDE delegation to the United Kingdom mission organised in close co-operation with AFET and INTA, was a very timely visit following the announcement by the President of the European Commission and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to enhance strategic cooperation after their leaders’ meeting of 2 October 2024. The UK in particular has set out its ambition for an “enhanced EU-UK defence cooperation,” in light of Russia’s continuing war of aggression in Ukraine.

The eight-member delegation from the Subcommittee on Security and Defence (SEDE) was in Kyiv on 25 and 26 October 2024. This mission was the first in the new parliamentary term and allowed the Members to express a strong message of solidarity and unwavering support to Ukraine and its citizens in the face of Russia’s unjust and illegal war of aggression.

SEDE organises a public hearing on 'Hybrid War: protection of undersea cables in the Baltic Sea' on Tuesday, 18 February 2025 from 11.15 to 12.45hrs in Brussels (room SPINELLI 3G2). Subsea infrastructure, such as communication cables and energy pipelines, serves as the global nervous system, simultaneously transporting critical energy resources across continents and enabling communication across the world.

These critical infrastructures are increasingly the target of hybrid activities by malign actors, threatening the security and supply of communication and energy. Recent incidents in the Baltic Sea have highlighted the vulnerabilities of subsea infrastructure. Therefore, three experts will brief the SEDE Committee to explore the technical and geopolitical ramifications of sabotage and other disruptions to our subsea infrastructure, and to discuss possible options for response and improving resilience to such actions.

This discussion is particularly timely after the recent informal European Council retreat discussions on the need to enhance the financing of European Defence. ...

Innovation, Hybrid, and Cyber on the Baltic Sentry and hybrid threats, to debrief the Members on the recent Summit of Baltic Sea Allies, which took place in Helsinki. Furthermore, the SEDE Coordinators will have an in camera exchange of views with Andrius Kubilius, Commissioner for Defence and Space, on the White Paper on Strengthening European Defence.
