The recent exchange of highly tense letters in December 2011 between European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and the ahead of scheduled departure from Budapest of the joint EU – IMF negotiating team preparing the talks on a new IMF – loan were just two signs the current Hungarian center – right government of Prime Minister Orbán has strained relations with key Western leaders.
The new Middle East will likely be more dynamic, more democratic but more chaotic. It has both opportunities and risks for NATO countries, which have learned the hard way they are not omnipotent in this volatile region. They should adjust their policies accordingly – a complete retreat is not an option either.
2011 második felében Lengyelország követte hazánkat az Európai Unió „soros elnöki székében”. A magyar félévhez hasonlóan ez az elnökség is a Lisszaboni Szerződés rendelkezéseinek megfelelően, a korábbiakhoz képest szűkebb jogkörökkel működött: az Európai Tanács állandó elnökének valamint a külügyi és biztonságpolitikai főképviselő pozíciójának létrejötte óta a soros elnök reprezentatív funkciója háttérbe szorult, s mandátuma az Európai Unió Tanácsának elnöklésére terjed ki.
